PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hair dye composition emitting reduced ammonia odor in use, suppressing hair damage and deterioration of feeling and having excellent dyeing and bleaching effects. SOLUTION: The hair dye composition is composed of a first agent containing an alkaline agent and a second agent containing an oxidizing agent and both agents are mixed with each other in use. The composition contains the components (a) to (c) and optionally (d) an oxidative dye in the mixed state, and has a pH of 8-12 and the content of the component (a) of 0.1-20 wt.% in the mixed state. (a) A betaine compound expressed by general formula (1) or its acid addition salt (R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each independently a 1-3C alkyl; X is a 1-3C alkylene; and Y is CO<SB>2</SB><SP>-</SP>, SO<SB>3</SB><SP>-</SP>, OSO<SB>3</SB><SP>-</SP>or OPO<SB>3</SB><SP>-</SP>), (b) an oxidizing agent and (c) ammonia or its salt.
