PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing glass materials for molding, by which a plurality of glass materials or a glass material group each having a constant shape and a constant glass volume can be produced in a high production efficiency and a high yield even if the glass materials each have a high coefficient of thermal expansion or a small volume; and to provide a method for producing glass optical elements, by which the glass optical elements can be produced in a high production efficiency by using the glass materials or the glass materials constituting the glass material group. SOLUTION: The method for producing the glass materials for molding comprises sequentially dropping molten glass of optical glass having an average coefficientαh of linear expansion within a temperature range of 100-300°C of≥120×10<SP>-7</SP>/°C into a receiving mold from a flow-out pipe or separating the melt while allowing it to flow down, preparing a plurality of pre-formed glass preform spheres by cooling, performing a heat-treatment comprising heating the glass preform spheres to a temperature within a range of (transition temperature -80°C) to (transition temperature +50°C) and then cooling the preform spheres, and removing at least one part or the whole of the surface of each glass sphere subjected to the heat-treatment by mechanical processing to obtain precise glass spheres. The method for producing the glass optical elements comprises press molding the glass materials produced by the method in a heated and softened state by using a molding mold.
