PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-frequency discharge lamp lighting device using a frequency inverter which has a small and economical structure in which, although a starting capacitor is fixed with a side of a discharge lamp, it is made possible to judge whether the discharge lamp is connected or not. SOLUTION: The high-frequency discharge lamp lighting device 5 has a built-in high-frequency inverter 4 which makes a high-frequency lighting of a thermionic cathode type discharge lamp 1 and which connects outside with a capacitor 3 for starting up the above thermionic cathode type discharge lamp 1. A filament falling of the discharge lamp 1 or an existence of the starting capacitor 3 are judged by impressing a fine AC voltage Va or a fine rectangular wave voltage Vb on both ends of the above discharge lamp 1, and when a filament falling or non-existence of a starting capacitor 3 is detected, a judgement circuit (a voltage detecting apparatus 7 between terminals 5a, 5b) stops oscillation of the high-frequency inverter 4.
