<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection-type display device capable of simultaneously displaying a low luminance region and a high luminance region on single screen. <P>SOLUTION: The projection-type display device 50 is equipped with a light source 1, an illumination optical system 2, a liquid crystal panel 4, a projection lens 5 and a screen 49. The illumination optical system 2 fetches luminous flux emitted from the light source 1 and illuminates a region to be illuminated with the fetched luminous flux. The liquid crystal panel 4 has a region to be illuminated, where an optical image is formed according to the electrical signal. The projection lens 5 enlarges and projects the luminous flux emitted from the liquid crystal panel 4. The screen 49 receives projected light from the projection lens 5. The illumination optical system 2 has a partial dimming element 16, having a transmission region 19 and a dimming region 18 that have transmittance lower than that of the transmission region 19.
