<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simpler and more compact negative pressure type booster having high responsiveness when a brake pedal is strongly stepped on. <P>SOLUTION: The negative pressure type booster is provided with a by-pass passage 51 provided between a sound-absorbing material 27 and an input member 20 and directly communicated with outside air; and a slide type retainer 52 comprising at least two retainer parts 53, 55 provided on the input member and relatively slidable in a radial direction.
