<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element with which color break is prevented and a wide variety of colors are displayed. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element has: a first substrate equipped with a first electrode; a second substrate equipped with a second electrode and delimiting a display unit and a background region; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first and second substrates; a first polarizing plate placed opposite to the first substrate; a first light source placed opposite to the first polarizing plate; a transmission/reflection plate placed opposite to the second substrate and transmitting or reflecting incident light depending on the polarization state; a second polarizing plate placed opposite to the transmission/reflection plate; a second light source placed opposite to the second polarizing plate; a voltage applying means to apply voltage between the first and second electrodes; and a control circuit with which a frame is time divided into sub-frames, the first or the second light source is made to emit light within respective sub-frames, and alignment states of the liquid crystal layer are switched between each other in synchronization therewith. In the liquid crystal display element, the transmission/reflection plate reflects light in the polarization state of being transmitted through the first polarizing plate and the liquid crystal layer with no voltage applied thereto, and transmits light in the polarization state of being transmitted through the second polarizing plate. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
