PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a navigation system wherein maps to be superposed are easily made into electronic media, and multiple pieces of map information are displayed at the same time. SOLUTION: The navigation system includes a display section, a recording section, and a control section. The recording section has: a first map data comprising a background layer necessary for displaying land forms and road shapes, and a character symbol layer having data for indicating character information or map symbols to be displayed by being superposed on the background layer; and a second map data (an old map layer L14) of an earlier age than the first map data. In the recording section, the first map data has a road layer L13 having road network information to be used by hardware in order to perform map matching to correct the position of own vehicle onto a road to be predicted or in order to perform route guidance, and the second map data does not have the road layer. The control section displays, on the display section, the map based on the second map data (the old map layer L14) on which the road layer L13 of the first map is superposed.
