PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely control an opening/closing phase of a valve even when hardly acquiring a pulse signal from a cam position sensor. SOLUTION: An ECU executes a program which includes a step (S200) of stopping an engine when an ignition switch is off (YES in S100), a step (S300) of setting the phase of an intake cam shaft (the opening/closing phase of the intake valve) to be a most delayed phase, a step (S400) of advancing the phase of the intake cam shaft, a step (S500) of detecting the phase of the intake cam shaft in accordance with the rotating speed of an electric motor for an intake VVT mechanism which changes the phase of the intake cam shaft, and a step (S700) of stopping changing the phase of the intake cam shaft when the phase to be detected in accordance with the rotating speed of the electric motor is advanced to a target phase (YES in S600).
