PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element which can be driven with simple member constitution and at low voltage and has high display contrast and a high white display reflection factor and wherein black tone variation is reduced in repeated drive. SOLUTION: In the display element including an electrolyte containing silver or a compound containing silver in its chemical structure between opposed electrodes and performing driving operation of the opposed electrodes so as to cause the dissolution and deposition of silver, at least one sort of silver salt (referred to as silver salt 1) formed by an anion group containing an aromatic ring and at least one sort of silver salt (referred to as silver salt 2) formed by an anion group not containing an aromatic ring are included in the electrolyte.
