PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic encoder, having resistance to external noise and preventing incorrect operations by obtaining a large amount of output voltages (amplitudes). SOLUTION: Each of magnetic resistance effect elements A1, A2, A3, A4 has at least a pin layer and a free layer in which an internal magnetization direction changes, based on an external magnetic field generated by a magnetic substance 11, wherein the magnetization directionαof the pin layer is parallel to the side 11A of an outer circumference and also set in a first direction (Z2 direction) that is perpendicular to the rotation direction ra1-ra2 or a second direction (Z1 direction) being in reverse to the first direction, the initial magnetization directionβof the free layer is set in the first direction (Z2 direction) or the second direction (Z1 direction), each interval of magnetoresistance effect elements A1, A2, A3, A4 is set at a pitch ofλ/2, if the pitch between adjoining N-pole, and S-pole in the rotating direction is set atλ.
