PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an austenitic stainless steel having the characteristics of being nonmagnetic even when subjected to cold working, and having reduced deterioration in spring properties even when temperature is made high, and suitable as the material for a spring. SOLUTION: The austenitic stainless steel suitable as the material for a spring can be obtained by preparing a chemical composition comprising, by mass, 0.05 to 0.10% C,≤1.0% Si, 5 to 6% Mn,≤0.10% P,≤0.010% S, 2.5 to 3.0% Ni, 17.0 to 18.0% Cr, 0.10 to 0.30% Mo, 2.5 to 2.8% Cu and 0.15 to 0.18% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities.
