PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reagent capable of selectively reducing an aldehyde alone through discriminating the aldehyde and a ketone. SOLUTION: A compound represented by the formula, NaBH(OCH(CF<SB>3</SB>)<SB>2</SB>)<SB>3</SB>, is provided. This compound is obtained by reaction between sodium borohydride and hexafluoroisopropanol in such an equivalent ratio as to be 3 or more equivalents of the hexafluoroisopropanol per equivalent of the sodium borohydride. This compound has the following physicochemical properties: 1H-NMR is 4.40(3H, septet, J=5.9 Hz) and melting point is higher than 300°C. A method for producing this compound, a method for reducing an aldehyde using this compound, and a method for producing the corresponding alcohol are also provided, respectively.
