1.166,670. Surgical suction devices. R. R. JACKSON. 20 Dec., - 1966, No. 56877/66. Heading A5R. [Also 'in Division F2V] A surgical instrument, to be held in the hand and. haying a main passage ,20 through which air may flow under the control of a valve, includes a control chamber 22 which is open to ambient pressure through a !port and is oonnected to the main passage by a subsidiary passage 26, the valve including a control member 16 which moves in response to changes of pressure in the control chamber brought about by -the- 'operator opening and closing the ambient pressure port. As shown, a suction device for withdrawing blood and tissue from a wound and able to be connected to a suction line 14 comprises a main passage 20 defined by a rubber tube 16 and leading to an extraction nozzle 12, 12', a control chamber 22 open to atmosphere through a port 24 in the handpiece 10 and a subsidiary passage 26, the device 'being such that with the port 24 open the suction line causes the walls of 'the tube 16 to engage each other and close the main passage but that on the closing of the port 24 with the operator's thumb the tube 16 opens and suction becomes available at the nozzle. In embodiments (Figures 7-11 not shown), the main passage includes a rigid tube (17) connected-to the rubber tube 16 and the subsidiary" passage' comprises 'an aperture (26a) in the rigid tube. The main passage may then be closed by the walls of the rubber tube moving to': close apertures (17a, 17b) in the end of the rigid 'tube. A further embodiment (Figures 5-6, not shown) includes a rubber diaphragm (16') which flexes so as to open or close the main passage, and the port to atmosphere and also the subsidiary passage comprise bores (25, 26') in the handpiece body. |
