A cost effective method for producing a controlled leakage path between a piston and a cylinder has the piston fitted to the cylinder followed by deformation of the cylinder wall and/or the piston. The cylinder wall is locally deformed until it touches the piston. On removal of the deforming force the cylinder wall springs back due to elasticity. The process does not require careful matching of cylinder bores with pistons. The leakage path provides a set amount of hydraulic damping.
