The engine has a piston (12) held displaceably in a cylinder (10) along a cylinder axis (14) between an upper dead center (28) and a lower dead center (30) lying away and closer from and to a crankshaft (22), respectively. The cylinder axis is located at an angle (32) to a connecting line (34) of the upper dead center with a crankshaft axis (24). The angle lies in a range from 1 degree to 4 degrees. A crankpin (26) passes through a plane lying parallel to the crankshaft axis before the piston reaches the upper dead center, where the cylinder axis lies on the crankshaft axis.
