PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving support apparatus which makes proper the frequency of exciting attention of a driver of its own vehicle, according to the position of the vehicle. SOLUTION: The driving support apparatus which excites the attention of the driver according to the position of the vehicle, is provided with a storage means for storing and keeping map information comprising at least road information and positional information on local substances requiring special attention having a predetermined attribute, a detecting means for detecting the vehicle position, an attention excitation means which determines whether or not the vehicle position is in a predetermined area requiring special attention, and excites attention of the driver of the vehicle when the position is determined to be in the area, and an attention-excitation requiring area setting means which determines whether or not any substance requiring special attention exists in a range of a predetermined distance from the vehicle by collating the vehicle position with the map information, and when it is determined that such a substance exists, extracts a first peripheral road surrounding the substance requiring special attention, and fixes a predetermined attention-excitation requiring area so that this extracted first peripheral road becomes the outermost brim part of the predetermined attention-excitation requiring area.
