Photographic images are produced by (i) subjecting an exposed silver halide emulsion layer which contains a tanning silver halide developer e.g. pyrocatechol to action of heat to develop and harden exposed areas of the emulsion (ii) contacting the emulsion at elevated temperature,during or after development, with a transfer material containing organic sulphur compounds which are capable of blackening silver halide at the elevated temperature and also containing one or more sulphonic acid hydraxides or organic hydrazo compounds which contain the group. and (iii) separating the contacted materials. Specified organic sulphur compounds are those of the formulae (a) wherein X is as alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or heterocyclic radical, NH 2 which may be substituted by substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl groups, or an ONH 4 group and W is H, alkyl, aryl or halogeno aralkyl e.g. isonicotinic acid thioamide, picolinic acid thioamide or N-4-methoxy phenyl thiourea. (b) where Y is hydrogen, alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or acyl and Z is amino,alkyl aryl or -NH 1 NH 2 which itself may be substituted by alkyl or amino substituted by Y e.g. 4-(4-methoxy phenyl)-thiosemicarbazide (c) ethylene-diisothio-urea hydrochloride (d) 2- thiourazile and 2-thiohydantoin and (e) where A is H acyl, or carboxylalkyl and B is- -CH 2 COOH e.g. carboxymethylthiomalic acid. Specified sulphonic acid hydrazides and hydrazo compounds are (1) mono-, di-and triamino guanidine and compounds of formula:- and R is hydrogen or alkyl (ii) mono-or dihydrazides of aliphatic or aromatic mono-or polycarboxylic or-sulphonic acids e.g. salicylic acid hydrazide, glutaric malic, citric and mucic acid hydrazides and p-toluene sulphonic acid hydrazides (iii) aliphatic and cycloaliphatic hydrazines and (e) semicarbazides and the compounds under (b) above. The transfer material may have these compound impregnated therein or contained in a layer of binder on a paper support. Such binders are gelatin, starch derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, cellulose derivatives, alginates and gallactomannanes: The emulsion may contain auxiliary non-tanning developers e.g. pyrazolid-3-ones. The transfer papers may contain moisteners e.g.triethylene glycol, glycerol, glycol, sorbitol sodium acetate or sodium sulphate. |
