The record player comprises in combination a sound-reproducing cone fixed in position, a needle, and a mechanical linkage, including successive sections interconnected by highlycompliant articulated portions, directly connecting the cone with the needle, whereby the cone is directly responsive to needle movements. As shown, a needle N is secured in a horizontal portion H of a linkage L which takes the form of a one-piece member moulded of polypropylene. The portion H has two integral hinges 53, 59, which lie along its longitudinal axis AA. The hinges are formed by sections, e.g. 51, 52, of V-shaped cross-section whose apex edges coincide to form the hinge line, e.g. 53. Hinge section 51 is cemented to a resilient pad 54, which in turn is cemented to the underside of a tone arm 15; an arm portion 62 extending upwardly from hinge section 58 is inserted in a pocket 28 in arm 15. Thus, the portion H is rocked about its axis by the needle N as it responds to the record groove modulations. This horizontal rocking movement is converted, by a hinge 70, Figs. 4 and 5, to vertical reciprocating movement of a vertical portion V of the linkage L. The tone arm 15 is supported by bearing ears 36A at the top of a yoke member 35, which also has a bushing 38, 39 which swivels in a bearing portion 41 integral with the phonograph deck 12 to provide horizontal movement. The vertical portion V includes an offset portion 77 which extends through an opening 40 in the yoke and bushing and is secured by a wedge 79 in the bushing 33 of a sound reproducing cone C. Thus, the cone C is directly responsive to movements of the needle N. The sound is emitted from the phonograph casing through perforations 18 in deck 12. Hinge 70, which lies in axis CC, is laterally offset from axis AA by an amount which may be pre-selected. The volume output of the cone C is directly proportional, while the compliancy of the linkage is inversely proportional, to the amount of offset. Vertical movement of tone arm 15 is permitted by another integral hinge 66, and horizontal movement by a further integral hinge 74. By alignment of hinges 53 and 59 along axis AA, the inertia of body portion 46 of portion H is minimized. This in turn, together with the high compliance of all the articulated portions of the linkage L, ensures minimum wear of the record grooves. The phonograph is suitable for incorporation in toys, e.g. talking dolls. |
