<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus capable of acquiring excellent image data from an original separately read by dividing the original by each division region. <P>SOLUTION: A user allows an image read unit capable of reading, e.g. an A4 size original to read a greater sized (e.g. A2 size) original image than the readable size by separately dividing the original by each partial region thereof. An image receiving section 200 of the image processing apparatus 20 receives a plurality of read division images and stores them to a memory or the like. An image composite section 202 reads division images whose number is equal to the divided number from a buffer memory or the like and composes the division images to produce a composite image. A background detection section 204 generates a density histogram on the basis of the image after the composite to detect a background detection level of the composite image.
