<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably prevent the occurrence of image defects by suppressing the occurrence of cleaning failures and keeping a suitable cleaning performance with respect to toner remaining on an intermediate transfer member surface after a secondary transfer. <P>SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus 1 primarily transfers a toner image from a photoreceptor drum 22 onto a surface of an intermediate transfer belt 8, and performs the secondary transfer from the intermediate transfer belt 8 to paper P. Also, after the secondary transfer, the apparatus performs cleaning of the remaining toner on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8 by applying a bias with a reverse polarity against the toner charge. After performing the secondary transfer of the toner image on the paper P, the apparatus continuously rotates the intermediate transfer belt 8 and applies a first transfer bias until the upper edge of a toner image forming area on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8 passes a primary transfer part 30. Consequently, the remaining toner on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 8 can surely be cleaned and recovered by a cleaning device for belt or drum, even if charged in either of positive or negative polarity in an image forming process. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
