PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data compression method which enhances the compression rate of transmitted data.

SOLUTION: A device for decoding luminance information with a block format by applying variable length code tables mutually different depending on the number of unit blocks in which an object is in existence in a macroblock to be decoded, is provided with: a demultiplexer for capturing a luminance component coded block pattern (CBPY) of the macroblock from received bit streams, wherein the luminance component coded block pattern (CBPY) indicates which blocks to have coded luminance information among a plurality of luminance blocks in the macroblock; and a texture decoder that obviates decoding of transmitted blocks without luminance information in the luminance component coded block pattern (CBPY) on the basis of shape information in the macroblock and decodes coded texture data by using the luminance component coded block pattern (CBPY) of the macroblock.
