PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for controlling an automatic transmission having a manual mode, which apparatus can give a degree of freedom of setting for respecting driver's will for the limiting value of the rotational speed of a power source to a maximum, and also can suppress that the rotational speed of the power source exceeds the set limiting value when the manual mode has been selected. SOLUTION: The apparatus for controlling the automatic transmission having the manual mode is connected to an engine 1 (a power source), and has two speed changing modes, one is an automatic speed changing mode for automatically changing the speed according to the condition of a vehicle, and the other is a manual mode for manually changing the speed. The apparatus is configured so as to comprise a limiting value setting means (see Fig.2) for arbitrarily setting at least one limiting value among an upper limit value and a lower limit value of the rotational speed of the engine according to driver's will when the manual mode has been selected, and a manual mode controlling means (see Fig.3) for automatically changing the speed such that the rotational speed of the engine does not exceed the limiting value set by the limiting value setting means in running with the manual mode selected.
