PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical external resonator type surface emitting laser with modulation capability and a display unit having such a laser. SOLUTION: A vertical external resonator type surface emitting laser includes: a pumping light source 31; a laser chip 41 which is energized by a pump beam irradiated from the pumping light source for emitting a laser beam with a predetermined wavelength; a folding mirror 47 which is separated from the laser chip and has a reflecting surface arranged to be oblique against an incident light axis of a light incoming from the laser chip for changing a progressive route of the incoming laser beam; and a movable mirror unit 50 which is arranged in opposition to the folding mirror and is rotated for modulating the incoming laser beam reflected by the folding mirror and reflecting the resultant laser beam to the folding mirror side.
