PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing unit and method which enable the liquid passage of a liquid ejector to be cleaned efficiently and economically. SOLUTION: The washing apparatus 30 for cleaning the liquid passage of an ink jet recorder 10 by circulating a washing fluid is equipped with a feed port 12 for feeding the washing fluid to an ink passage 13 while communicating with one end of the liquid passage, a discharge port 14 for discharging the washing fluid from the liquid passage while communicating with the other end of the liquid passage, a washing fluid tank 310 for holding the washing fluid to feed to the liquid passage and communicating with the feed port 12, a recovery bottle 320 for recovering the washing fluid discharged from the liquid passage while communicating with the discharge port 14 and a recovery bottle 330 for recovering the washing fluid discharged from the ink passage 13 while communicating with the discharge port 14 when making the recovery bottle 320 which holds the recovered washing fluid connected with the feed port 12.
