1,167,636. Purification of vinyl acetate. CELANESE CORP. 25 May, 1967 [26 May, 1966], No. 24282/67. Heading C2C. Vinyl acetate is purified from contaminant methyl acetate, by a distillation to remove an overhead stream of vinyl acetate and a major proportion of methyl acetate and yield a purified base stream of vinyl acetate with a minor proportion of the methyl acetate. The overhead stream is water washed and returned as a reflux to the distillation. Ethyl acetate present in the base stream may then be removed by a water extractive distillation from the preheated 50-90‹ C. stream. A flow diagram of apparatus for the treatment of crude derived from the oxidation of ethylene in the presence of acetic acid and a noble metal of Group VIII of Mendeleef's Periodic Table, e.g. palladium and a cupric salt, is described.
