PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a glass substrate having a protrusion, which method is simple, is applicable even to multi-kind and small-quantity production, can form a protrusion of a relatively large width or of a complicated shape in high accuracy, and can form a protrusion on the surface of a glass substrate or on the surface of a thin film without any adverse affection by the fine irregularities on the surface of an indenter. SOLUTION: The method for producing a glass substrate having a protrusion on the surface is a method comprising forming compressive stress areas 2 by applying external force to a glass substrate 1 and forming a protrusion 3 on the surface 1a of the glass substrate by chemical etching with an etchant, wherein the formation of the compressive stress areas 2 is carried out by repeatedly sweeping a processing tool 4 on the glass substrate 1 in the first direction (direction X), and controlling the sweep position of the processing tool 4 in a manner that there is an overlap between the compressive stress areas adjoining each other in the second direction (direction Y) rectangularly crossing the first direction.
