PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition which contains a water-soluble polymer comprising a cellulose composite material and a cellulose derivative and has excellent pigment storage stability. SOLUTION: This water-based coating composition is characterized by containing (A) ≥0.1% of a cellulose composite material comprising fine crystalline cellulose and sodium carboxymethylcellulose or xanthan gum, and (B) ≥0.2% of water-soluble polymer comprising a cellulose derivative in a (A)/(B) solid content ratio of 1/9 to 7/3, and having viscosity of 2,500 to 10,000 mPa s.
