PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly activate an air fuel ratio sensor and prevent an element crack caused by the drenching of an element in an air fuel ratio control device for a hydrogen engine provided with an air fuel ratio sensor at the upstream of a catalyst in an exhaust gas passage. SOLUTION: The air fuel ratio control device for the hydrogen engine includes a first air fuel ratio sensor provided at the upstream of the catalyst in the exhaust gas passage of the hydrogen engine and provided with a heater, a current carrying control means controlling current carrying to the heater, and an air fuel ratio control means performing air fuel ratio control based on an output of the first air fuel ratio sensor. A second air fuel ratio sensor is provided in or at the downstream of the catalyst. The current carrying control means limits current carrying to the heater (step S9) and the air fuel ratio control means performs air fuel ratio control based on an output of the second air fuel ratio sensor (step S11) until the temperature of the first air fuel ratio sensor reaches a predetermined activation temperature after an engine start.
