The invention comprises metallized formazane dyes which in the metal-free form are of formula <FORM:1022043/C4-C5/1> wherein A1 is a phenyl or diphenyl radical which may be substituted and which may be the same or different in the two positions and X1 is an -OH or -COOH group in ortho position to the -N = N- or = N-NH-group. The dyes are prepared (a) by reacting 2 moles of a diazo compound of an amine X1-A-NH2 with 1 mole of a compound of formula Z-CH2-CO-R wherein Z is -CN or -CO-R and R is a hydroxy, methoxy, ethoxy or amino group, with simultaneous or subsequent metallization or (b) reacting in 2 stages with separate amounts of 1 mol. of a diazo compound of the same or different amines and metallizing as above. Cyanoacetic acid is excluded as a reactant in process (b). The dyes may be reacted at an intermediate or final stage of preparation with a component introducing a reactive group (i.e. a group capable of reacting with fibres bearing a hydroxyl and/or amino group to form a covalent linkage). The dyes give red, blue, grey and black shades. |
