PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cope with all imaging elements without being limited by the pixel increase or driving system or the like of the imaging elements and to easily improve and change a camera performance. SOLUTION: The interchangeable lens unit 30 is made freely attachable and detachable to/from the camera main body 40, and signals can be transmitted and received between them through connectors 29 and 39. A photographing lens 12, the imaging element 16 and a ROM 28 storing a control program of an MPU 34 provided on the side of the camera main body 40 or the like are provided on the side of the interchangeable lens unit 30, and a relatively expensive signal processing circuit 32 and the MPU 34 or the like are provided on the side of the camera main body 40. The MPU 34 receives the control program intrinsic to the unit 30 and various kinds of data from the ROM 28 and an EEPROM 27 loaded on the interchangeable lens unit 30 and controls processing in the signal processing circuit 32 or the like on the basis of the control program and the various kinds of data.
