930,058. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 24, 1962 [May 17, 1961], No. 15599/62. Class 39 (4). A heterogeneous nuclear reactor comprising fuel elements disposed in a moderator material in a lattice constituted by a number of sub-lattice assemblies of differently orientated parallel elements, is characterized in that the fuel elements are disposed inside channels in the lattice comprising a central zone occupied by all the sub-lattices and lateral zones occupied by a single sub-lattice, all the zones lying inside the moderator material. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the fuel channels comprise two sets of tubes 1, 2 at right-angles to each other. The tubes may be pressure tubes immersed in a tank 4 containing liquid moderator, such as heavy water; the corners of the tank may be rounded so that the tank is generally spherical. Controlrods 20 pass vertically into the tank, that is at right angles to both sets of tubes 1 and 2. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tank 4 is hexagonal in plan and three sets of tubes pass between pairs of opposite parallel sides; thus the central zone is crossed by all three sets of tubes whilst some of the outer zones are crossed by two sets and some by only one set. The various sub-lattices may be designed for different thermal positions, for example one could be used for steam generating and another for superheating. |
