[Also in Divisions B8 and Fl] In an aparatus for winding a web into rolls and including a pair of parallel rollers, one of which is a bed-roller, carrying means for severing the web to form an end and a beginning, a glue applicator is positioned adjacent the rollers at the exit side thereof, and glue is applied therefrom to at least one localised area a short distance from said end through the agency of means associated with rotation of the bed-roller. A web 10 of paper passes over a bed-roller 11 provided provided with blades 16, 17 rigid with a journalled shaft 15 which is oscillated to project blades 16, 17 radially for co-operation with a blade 21 on a roller 20 to sever the web. A foot 26, also rigid with shaft 15, is also projected, whereby a moved surface 27 thereon presses the severed end of the web against a roller 33 rotating through a glue reservoir 34, to apply a spot or area of glue to said end for sticking the latter to the wound roll. Pins 48, rigid with blade 17, engage the web beginning 22 with a rubber block 49 on roller 20 to feed said beginning positively to the roll-winding station and a shaft 45 is oscillated to project a rubber block 47, rigid therewith, to press said beginning against the glued core on which the web is next to be wound. Adhesive is alternatively applied to said end by an applicator comprising a body 60 formed with a chamber 61 containing a piston 63 carrying opposed cup leathers 64 and biased inwardly by a spring 65 against an abutment 66. Adhesive is supplied to chamber 61 via a ball valve 72 normally closed by a spring 73. On severing the web, compressed air is momentarily admitted to the inner end of chamber 61, whereby piston 63 moves outwardly to open a ball valve 77 against the bias of a spring 78 and to expel a globule of adhesive from an orifice 76, the web end then being pressed against the latter by foot 26. Outward movement of piston 63 also serves to open valve 72 for admitting fresh adhesive to chamber 61. |
