[Also Division H2] Variation of the duration of a cycle or any portion thereof in a stepping programme controller, (for washing machines, for example) is obtained by providing intermittent stepping movement at the fastest desired rate and selectively interfering therewith in a rhythmic sequence so as to produce slower stepping rates. A main shaft 11 (carrying operational cams not shown) is stepped by a pawl 25 oscillated by eccentric 27 which is driven via gearing from a synchronous motor 1. A hollow shaft 12, loose on shaft 11, is driven steadily by gear 10 from gear 9 (shown merely diagrammatically) and carries with it a track 20 and cams 13, 14, NIl, and N12. Pawl 25 is oscillated once every 90 seconds, for example, but steps shaft 11 only when gap 21 in track 20 allow engagement with ratchet wheel 24. This normally permits pawl 25 to move, say, three teeth of the ratchet 24 which corresponds to a single step in the main programme sequence of shaft 11. A spring 31 tends to lift pawl 25 clear of ratchet 24 but a stronger spring 36 acting on a lever 34 causes a pin 39 to urge the pawl towards the ratchet 24 unless an electromagnet 41 is energised whereupon pawl 25 is rendered ineffective. Cams 13 and 14 are used merely for operations which continue without regard to the programme control, such as oscillation of a washing drum. Cams NI1 and NI2 regularly actuate contacts, not shown, at intervals of 120 seconds and 60 seconds, for example, respectively. By manual operation of switches (Fig. 1, not shown) pulses may be fed from one or other or both of these contacts to the electromagnet 41 and by interference with the 90 second period of pawl 25 cause it to be ineffective for one, two, or three out of each four reciprocations (Fig. 2, not shown). Cams Npl to Np4 are provided on shaft 11 such that by manual operation of switches in series with contacts (not shown) operated by these cams certain selected portions only of the main programme may be extended, using the circuit, for example, of Fig. 6 (not shown). Temperature or water-level responsive switches may be connected to the electromagnet 41 to inhibit the programme progression. A plurality of gaps 21 may be provided in track 20, some of which could be rendered ineffective by operation of the electromagnet as a function of cams NI1 and N12 instead of, or in addition to, the control of the number of teeth engaged by pawl 25. The gap 21 may be made longer so that pawl 25 can move the shaft 11 more than one programme step to enable one or more programme steps to be overrun. A knob 12a is provided on shaft 11 for advancing the programme manually. |
