The present invention relates to an optimized method and apparatus for transferring SCCP messages (120, 122, 124) in a Signaling System 7 communications network. More particularly, the invention relates to a method and a gateway (110) capable of extracting SCCP parametric information from SCCP messages (120) in situations where a SCCP message (122) transferred by the gateway would not be able to preserve the original parametric information. Such information is preserved and conveyed as SCCP user data, allowing the original message to be reconstructed in an inverse process.
