<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To learn the state of a printing medium, such as the presence or absence of a loaded tape cassette, with relatively high accuracy and reduction in the number of revolutions of a DC motor suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: The voltage between the terminals T1 and T2 of a tape transfer motor 34 which is the DC motor whose number of revolutions is kept constant by an electronic governor circuit 36 is divided through resistors and converted into digital signals through A-D converters 46 and 47.
