A cartridge for a pen including a marking device (1120) such as an ink jet head and a non marking stylus (1156) for contacting the writing surface, the pen being operative to mark a visible path onto the surface, the marking device being electronically controllable to change an attribute of the path such as colour or line thickness. The pen includes a user interface such as buttons or a sliders (1404, 1406, 1408) and a display (1410) whereby a user may modify the attribute. A sensor is capable of sensing images including coded data or colour which can be stored in a memory or transmitted to an external control source. The stylus can slide along its longitudinal axis to activate a switch to power the print head operating integrated circuit and/or open a rotary ink jet head cap. The stylus may include a pressure transducer to measure the force applied by the hand as further security in identifying a signature. |
