In the preparation of a thickener (I) from a polysaccharide (II) in fine grain or powder form by mixing in a mixer and thermal treatment, the novelty is that thermal treatment is carried out in a water vapor atmosphere at over 90% relative humidity, which is adjusted or controlled so that (II) is not converted to a melt. Independent claims are included for (1) preparation of (I) from (II) by mixing in a mixer and thermal treatment above 100[deg]C; (2) mixer for carrying out this process.
