Method and apparatus for aligning source data streams in a communications network

An alignment node (150) is coupled to received a source data stream (112) organized as frames. The alignment node detects a frame boundary of the source data stream at a detected position at a first point in time (T1). The alignment node computes an offset defined by the displacement of the frame boundary from a pre-determined position at a second point in time (T2). An alignment adjustment corresponding to the offset is communicated to the source of the source data stream.
