A gas turbine engine containment system comprising a force absorbing arrangement capable of absorbing the force exerted thereon by an ejected portion of a failed fan, compressor and/or turbine disc or blade, the system being characterised in that the force absorbing arrangement circumferentially surrounds at least a major proportion of the axial length of the engine. The force absorbing arrangement may comprise a force absorbing material 34 located between inner and outer skins 36, 38 of an engine casing or nacelle 12. There may be provided two separate sections of force absorbing material 34, one surrounding a fan 14 and compressor(s) 20, 22 of an engine, and one surrounding a turbine(s) 26, 28, 30 of the engine. The force absorbing material 34 may comprise a para-aramid material such as Kevlar. |
