A vertical moving apparatus and a method of controlling the same are provided to travel the vertical moving apparatus in a state of standing up a body thereof. A vertical moving apparatus includes a pivotal arm portion(121) hinge-engaged to a body(101) for standing up the body in a state of supporting the body to a drive wheel(111), an erect sensor(142) for sensing a state of standing up the body, a pair of pivot sensors(141,143) for sensing pivotal degree of the body, a controller controlling the pivotal arm portion on the basis of a sense signal of the erect sensor and controlling the drive wheel on the basis of a sense signal of the pivot sensors for supporting the state of standing up the body.
