Apparatus for moving a milling-cutter, drill &c. comprises a plurality of cams 21, 22, 23 rotatably mounted on a housing 13, one of the cams 22 contacting a sub-housing 12 on which the housing 13 slides, and another cam 21 being connected by linkage 47 to a slide 30 movable transversely on the housing 13, so that rotation of the cams causes the cutter 40 supported from the slide 30 to make a compound movement. The third cam 23 moves a slide 56 engaging a cam 55 on the cutter slide 35 moving vertically or horizontally on the slide 30. A jointed belt drive rotates the cutter 40. All the slides move on balls. The cutter is initially positioned by adjusting a cutter head 38 on compound slides mounted on the slide 35 and by adjusting the sub-housing 12 on a base 11. The cams and followers are biased into contact by fluidpressure means. Bellows-type dust covers protect the moving parts. In a machine embodiment, the work is carried on an indexible turret and the milling, with one or more heads, is electrically controlled. The cam 55 is replaceable to allow varying ratios of reproduction and the cam is connected to the slide 35 by way of a push-rod and rollers. The tool can be withdrawn rapidly from a workpiece by an hydraulic device abutting the slide 35. |
