A field sequential image display device and a method for driving the same are provided to suppress flicker by increasing an average driving frequency of a single-color light source without conversion of a frame rate. A field sequential image display device having plural primary color light sources includes an image resolving unit(10), an image display panel(70), and a light source(90). The image resolving unit resolves a frame into fields, where the number of the fields is larger than the number of primary colors of the primary color light sources. The image display panel sequentially displays the fields. The light source includes the primary color light sources which are driven in synchronization with display of the fields, so as to supply a color light corresponding to color elements of the fields to the image display panel. An average driving frequency of the primary color light sources is larger than a frame rate.
