An apparatus and a method for accessing map data are provided to enhance speed of accessing map data by allowing one cash memory to store map data and supplying the map data to plural data usage parts. An apparatus for accessing map data includes a controller(160), a map data storage unit(130), a cash memory(140), and a map data management unit(150). The controller includes plural map data usage parts for performing predetermined tasks using the map data. The map data storage unit stores the map data. The cash memory stores the map data stored in the storage unit. The map data management unit reads map data required by the map data usage parts, from the map data storage unit, stores the read map data in the cash memory, and supplies the stored map data to the map data usage parts.
