[Also in Division F2] A spherical bearing is made by placing an inner bearing member 1, which has had at least a part of its bearing surface coated with tin, copper, lead or a mixture thereof, in a mould a and casting around it the head of an aluminium outer bearing, having an integral rod portion 3, so that the aluminium alloys with the coating to form a bearing surface, then removing the outer bearing with the member 1 gripped in it and swaging the head portion 5 to produce a clearance B between the outer and inner bearing members such that the inner bearing member is freely rotatable. The rod portion may be provided with an internal or an external thread as required, after removal of casting fins. The hardness of the inner bearing surface is initially HRC 60 to 66 but after casting of the outer bearing is reduced to HRC 40 to 45. |
