PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To splice optical fibers with the tip end of the core wires surely abutted on. SOLUTION: The core wire 82A and the coating part 82B at the tip end of one optical fiber 82 are inserted into the core wire inserting groove 7802 and the coating part inserting groove 7804 of a mechanical splice 78 respectively, the optical fiber 82 is held on a first movable base 8. A second movable base 10 is moved in the direction of a fixing base 6, the core wire 82A and the coating part 82B at the tip end of the optical fiber 82 held on the second movable base 10 are inserted into the core wire inserting groove 7802 and the coating part inserting groove 7804 of the mechanical splice 78. Then, the end face of the core wire 82A of the optical fiber 82 held on the first movable base 8 is pushed by the core wire 82A of the optical fiber 82 held on the second movable base 10, thereby making the first movable base 8 retreat against the pressing force of a coil spring 24. Upon visual recognition of the retreat of the first movable base 8, the two optical fibers 82 are connected by the mechanical splice 78. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
