PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a select assist device of an automatic transmission capable of providing a select lever operation force characteristic corresponding to a request, by expanding a degree of freedom of a layout by miniaturization of a select lever, while securing reliability by the mechanical connection of the select lever and a range position switching device. SOLUTION: An abnormal operation position detecting part 38 adds a detection quantity of a positive detection characteristic to a detection quantity of a negative detection characteristic, determines abnormality of a sensor as to whether it is in a normal range or not to a reference detection quantity, when it is discriminated to be abnormal, by to which direction of the positive and the negative, an addition detection value changes to the reference detection quantity which sensor is abnormal is determined and determines the abnormality of the sensor up to starting and stopping after determining the starting by a position/operation starting/direction discriminating block 33.
