[Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Stalks of sugar cane are cleaned, split and the pith removed so as to leave undamaged strips of rind made up of bundles of fibres. For certain uses the individual fibres in the rind are loosened by pressing rollers or by drawing over a curved surface which may be a roller. An array of the strips may then be subjected to a pressing and heat treatment whereupon the fibre bundles in the strips spread laterally and become overlaid. On cooling the natural adhesive in the rind resets and an integral mass is formed. Thus boards, panels or veneers may be formed. Suitable conditions for the pressing treatment are a press or mould pressure of 300 p.s.i., a temperature of 280‹ F., a time of heating of about 9 mins. for an article “ inch or less thick and a moisture content of the rind of about 15%. Before the pressure is released the temperature should be lowered below 212‹ F. Additional binders such as a melamine adhesive may be added to the strips. By differently arranging the strips, boards having different surface texture and appearance may be obtained. Thin sheets of the material may be bonded together at rightangles to form a plywood-like structure or the material may be bonded to plywood to produce an ornamental finish. In the preparation of the rind strip the loose outer fibres may be left on the cane to produce a colouring effect in the final product. Curved articles may also be formed. |
