<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating an ion exchange member, which is advantageous when the oxidation resistance of the ion exchange member such as an ion exchange membrane is enhanced and to provide a method for manufacturing a membrane electrode assembly for fuel cell. <P>SOLUTION: The method for treating the ion exchange member comprises the steps of: preparing a treating liquid containing nitrosyl chloride (NOCl) and chlorine or another treating liquid consisting of a liquid mixture of hydrochloric acid with nitric acid and the ion exchange member such as the ion exchange membrane; bringing the ion exchange member into contact with the treating liquid; and washing the ion exchange member separated from the treating liquid with a washing medium such as washing water.
