PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoplastic copolymer having high heat-resistance and colorless transparency, excellent low water-absorption and fluidity and generating remarkably reduced amount of gas in retention under heating, a method for producing the copolymer, a thermoplastic resin composition containing the thermoplastic copolymer and a molded article or a film produced by forming the composition, etc. SOLUTION: The thermoplastic copolymer contains (i) 5-30 wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid ester unit containing an alicyclic alkyl group; (ii) 5-85 wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid alkyl ester unit; (iii) 0-10 wt.% unsaturated carboxylic acid unit; (iv) 10-50 wt.% glutaric anhydride unit; and 0-5 wt.% other vinyl monomer unit and/or aromatic vinyl monomer unit in total.
