PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing calcium zirconate by a sol-gel process inexpensively by using a chemically-stable zirconium source. SOLUTION: The method for producing calcium zirconate comprises the steps of: preparing a solution of zirconium alkoxide obtained by alkoxylating at least a part of zirconium salt, which is selected from the group consisting of chlorides, nitrates and acetates of zirconium, by bringing lower aliphatic alcohol into contact with zirconium salt; preparing a liquid mixture by mixing the solution of zirconium alkoxide with a lower aliphatic alcohol solution of calcium alkoxide prepared separately so that the molar ratio of zirconium to calcium is 1:0.9 to 1:1.2; adding an aqueous solution of an acid to the prepared liquid mixture to form a sol; drying the formed sol to obtain a gel; and burning the obtained gel to produce calcium zirconate.
